Decontamination is the use of physical or chemical means to remove, inactivate or destroy microorganisms (including infectious organisms) on a surface or item, rendering the item or surface safe for reuse, handling or disposal. We employ three levels/steps for decontamination (each level is an aggregate of lower-level methods) before achieving sterility. The levels/steps (in increasing order of intensity) are:
Cleaning
This is the first step in the decontamination process and involves the removal; with the assistance of biodegradable detergents or enzymatic products, and water; of both organic and inorganic material (such as blood, protein substances, other debris, etc.) from the wheelchair and it's surface.
Disinfecting
In this next step, we disinfect the wheelchair. In this process, we make sure that all microbes (with the exception of bacteria spores), including bactericidal, MRSA, mycobactericidal, fungicidal, levurocidal, enveloped viruses (incl. HIV, HBV, HCV), Norovirus, Rotavirus, Polyoma SV40, Adenovirus (type 5) are destroyed. In addition, during the implementation, we achieve the 4-Field Test standard.
Sterilization
In this final step, we apply high heat level of steam sterilization to the wheelchair, enabling complete destruction of all microbial life (not only killing disease-causing microorganisms but also eliminates transmissible agents such as spores and bacteria).
